Leader Message - Structure In A Growing Organization

Over the past several months, the Automation group within Interstates Control Systems has been going through some organizational and structural changes. Through that process, it has been good for me to reflect on "what is the purpose of structure in a growing organization". Here are a few of my thoughts, and maybe you can apply them to your organization as well.

  • What would prepare my organization to double in size over the next 10 years?
  • Have we given our people opportunity to grow and expand their capability?
  • Where is the current bottleneck in my organization? Am I a bottle neck? Have I enabled (mentored and trusted) people to take on additional responsibility?
  • Are we allowing team members to take some risks and try new things? And if it doesn't work out, have we set them up to remain in the organization or is their only choice to move out?
  • Do we have people that can build the business AND run the business?
  • Are we structuring with our clients in mind? Are the things we are doing ultimately going to provide better service to our clients?

So often, we get caught up in our day-to-day activities of running the business that we don't take the time for a "30,000 foot view" of where we need to go.

While you may not be going through a restructuring, these questions are healthy to consider.

Reflection on these things has been good for me as we consider the future. Maybe it could help you too.
